What is a diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic condition characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. The predominant form, type 2 diabetes, typically manifests in adults and results from inadequate insulin production or resistance in the body.
Over the past three decades, type 2 diabetes has become increasingly prevalent globally, irrespective of economic status. This condition can lead to severe complications affecting the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves. In contrast, type 1 diabetes is a persistent ailment where the pancreas produces minimal or no insulin independently.
Historically known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, type 1 diabetes necessitates external insulin administration.
Glucose is the sugar your body runs on, and insulin is the hormone that lets your cells take it out of the bloodstream. In type 2 diabetes the cells stop responding to insulin properly and the pancreas cannot keep up, so glucose stays high in the blood instead of being used. A diabetes test is simply the measurement of that glucose — either right now, or averaged over the past few months.
Between normal and diabetes sits prediabetes, where blood glucose is above the healthy range but not yet high enough to be called diabetes. It causes no symptoms at all, and it is the stage where diet, movement and weight still change what happens next — which is why testing, rather than waiting for symptoms, is what actually finds it.
What a diabetes test helps detect
One blood sample can show:
- Type 2 diabetes — the most common form, and the main reason people test
- Prediabetes, before it progresses and before any symptom appears
- Type 1 diabetes, and how well it is being controlled
- Gestational diabetes, the form that starts in pregnancy
- Whether existing diabetes treatment is holding your levels on target
- Blood sugar that runs too low (hypoglycaemia), including after medication
Signs you may need a Blood Sugar Test
Experiencing symptoms like excessive thirst (Polydipsia), frequent urination (Polyuria), intense hunger (Polyphagia), fatigue, unintentional weight loss, vision problems, slow healing, and the presence of sores and ulcers on the foot could signal potential health issues. When these symptoms occur collectively, they may indicate conditions such as diabetes. Seeking prompt medical attention is crucial for a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis to address any underlying health concerns.
A Diabetes Test: What Is It?
Diabetes tests are used to measure the amount of blood sugar, which can be done in 4 different ways.
The numbers themselves are what your doctor reads: an HbA1c of 6.5% or above indicates diabetes, 5.7 to 6.4% indicates prediabetes, and below 5.7% is normal. A fasting blood sugar test needs at least 8 hours of fasting, while HbA1c and random blood sugar tests do not require fasting at all. A fingertip glucometer reading is useful for day-to-day self-monitoring, but a venous sample analysed in an accredited laboratory is what a diagnosis is based on — and that is what Vesta Care collects at your home in Dubai.
Why is a diabetes test essential for me?
Type 2 diabetes rarely announces itself. Blood glucose can sit above the healthy range for years while you feel completely well, and by the time thirst, weight loss or blurred vision arrive the condition is usually already established. A diabetes test is how that silent stretch gets caught — and if you already live with diabetes, it is how you and your doctor know whether what you are doing is working.
