What is a Pregnancy test?
During pregnancy, a fertilized cell implanted in the uterus naturally releases a hormone called HCG (human chorionic gonadotropins) in women. This hormone is typically only present during pregnancy. To confirm pregnancy, a test examines the presence of this hormone in either blood or urine.
Two primary methods are employed for testing human pregnancy hormones: urine and blood tests. The earliest detection of pregnancy occurs through blood tests, which can estimate HCG levels at approximately 750 u/L starting in the fourth week. In most cases, a positive urine pregnancy test is obtained by pregnant women one week after the first day of a missed menstrual period. Additionally, a missed menstrual period serves as an indicator of pregnancy.
There is one practical difference worth knowing before you book. A home urine strip is qualitative — it answers yes or no. A laboratory beta‑hCG blood test is quantitative — it reports an actual number. That number confirms that hCG is present and how much of it there is. On its own it does not date a pregnancy or confirm that a pregnancy is developing normally, which is why a doctor may repeat the test after about forty‑eight hours or arrange a scan.
What a pregnancy blood test tells you
One blood draw measures:
- Whether the pregnancy hormone HCG is present in your blood
- The exact concentration of HCG, not just a positive or negative
- Pregnancy as early as seven to ten days after conception
- How your HCG level is progressing when the test is repeated at intervals
- An abnormal rise in HCG, which may indicate a twin pregnancy or a pregnancy-related issue
Types of Pregnancy Tests?
While your healthcare professional conducts a blood test, urine tests are usually completed at home.
What the pregnancy blood test measures
The Vesta Care Pregnancy Blood Test reports exactly one parameter — quantitative beta‑hCG. It is not a panel and it does not include any other hormone. Profiles that also contain Beta HCG alongside other hormones link to their own pages below.
Benefits of Home Pregnancy Test
Most people start with a home test, and for good reason. These are the live page’s three reasons, and each one is also where a laboratory beta-hCG blood test adds something a strip cannot.
