The virus

What is Covid?

COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by SARS-CoV-2, still impacts our lives. While not at its peak, understanding it remains crucial. It spreads through droplets when we cough, sneeze, or talk, causing symptoms like fever, cough, and fatigue.

Complications like pneumonia and blood clots are possible, but vaccination is the most effective way to prevent severe illness. Masking, distancing, and hand hygiene further protect ourselves and others. Stay informed with reliable sources like WHO, and consult healthcare professionals if needed. Remember, by making informed choices and taking action, we can navigate COVID-19 and prioritize our well-being together.

What one swab confirms

One nose or throat swab, collected at home, confirms:

  • The genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 virus
  • An active COVID-19 infection, when the result is positive
  • That the virus was not detected, when the result is negative
  • Infection early on, when viral load is typically higher
  • Even tiny amounts of virus, with mild or no symptoms
  • A result meeting travel, work and healthcare standards
UNDERSTANDING COVID-19

Symptoms, Complications and Prevention

While the peak has passed, COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, remains relevant. The illness typically presents with fever, cough, fatigue, and shortness of breath, although symptoms can vary widely. It spreads mainly through respiratory droplets in coughs, sneezes, and even talking.

Potential complications include pneumonia, blood clots, and long-term effects (“long COVID”). Fortunately, prevention strategies like vaccination (highly effective), masking (indoors and crowds), physical distancing, hand hygiene, good ventilation, and staying home when sick offer significant protection. While no specific cure exists, treatment options like antivirals, corticosteroids, and supportive care help manage symptoms and reduce complications. By staying informed and taking these measures, we can effectively navigate the realities of COVID-19 and protect ourselves and our communities.

How symptoms show up

Symptoms usually begin a few days after exposure and often start in the upper airway — a sore throat, headache, muscle aches or a change in taste and smell — before any fever appears. Because the picture differs so much from person to person, a test, not the symptom pattern, is what confirms whether SARS-CoV-2 is behind it.

Where it spreads fastest

Transmission concentrates in close, crowded and poorly ventilated indoor spaces, and a person can pass the virus on in the day or two before they feel anything at all. That pre-symptomatic window is the reason a swab after a known exposure is worth taking even while you still feel well.

When the chest is involved

Most infections stay in the upper airway, but the virus can reach the lower airways and cause pneumonia, and the inflammation it triggers can raise the risk of clotting problems. That risk is higher for older adults, during pregnancy, and for people living with chronic heart, lung, kidney or immune conditions.

Symptoms that outlast the infection

Some people report fatigue, breathlessness or difficulty concentrating that continues for weeks or months after the acute infection has cleared. The World Health Organization recognises this as post COVID-19 condition; it is assessed clinically over time rather than by any single laboratory result.

What protection looks like

Staying up to date with recommended vaccine doses is the measure most consistently linked to a lower risk of severe illness, and it matters most for older adults and people with chronic conditions. Masking in crowded indoor spaces, opening up ventilation and hand hygiene add further protection on top of it.

How it is treated

Antiviral medicines are most useful when started early in the illness and are prescribed by a doctor after assessing your risk; corticosteroids are reserved for more severe, oxygen-requiring illness rather than routine care at home. For most people recovery is supported by rest, fluids and symptom relief.

You’re more likely to need a PCR test if you:

If any of the following describes your situation, a swab is a reasonable next step.

Have respiratory symptoms

You have fever, cough, fatigue or shortness of breath and want to know whether SARS-CoV-2 is what is causing them.

Were a close contact

You have spent time close to someone who has since tested positive, and you need a result that reflects your own status rather than theirs.

Need it documented

You need a documented PCR result for travel, for work, or ahead of a hospital or clinic appointment.

Feel mild or nothing

You feel well, or only slightly unwell, after an exposure and want a test sensitive enough to pick up a low viral load.

Share a home with a case

Someone in your household has tested positive and you share the same indoor space day to day.

Are visiting someone vulnerable

You are about to see an elderly relative, a newborn, or someone whose immunity is reduced, and you want a recent result before you do.

A PCR result describes the sample taken at that moment. If your symptoms change or continue, the report is best reviewed with a doctor.

HOW THE TEST WORKS

What is Covid PCR Test?

A COVID-19 PCR test (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a type of diagnostic test used to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the virus that causes COVID-19. It’s considered the gold standard for COVID-19 testing due to its high accuracy and sensitivity.

Results:

  • Positive: This means the virus was detected in your sample, indicating you have an active COVID-19 infection.
  • Negative: This means the virus was not detected in your sample, suggesting you are not currently infected.
Here’s how it works:

Sample collection

A swab is used to collect a sample from your nose or throat (nasopharyngeal swab).

Amplification

The collected sample is analyzed in a laboratory using a technique called Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). This process multiplies the genetic material of the virus (if present) millions of times, making it easier to detect.

Detection

By analyzing the amplified genetic material, the test can determine if the virus is present in your sample.

The swab itself takes moments — it is the laboratory stages above that set how quickly your report comes back.

Following are the benefits that includes:

High Accuracy

PCR tests are highly accurate in detecting the virus, especially early in infection when viral load is typically higher.

Sensitivity

They can detect even tiny amounts of the virus, making them reliable even if you have mild or no symptoms.

Gold Standard

Due to their accuracy and sensitivity, PCR tests are considered the most reliable method for diagnosing COVID-19.

When a PCR test is the right test to book:
You have symptoms

Fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue or shortness of breath — a PCR test tells you whether SARS-CoV-2 is what is behind them.

After close contact

Someone at home, at work or in your class has tested positive and you want to know whether the virus reached you.

Travel, work or healthcare

Our PCR results are processed at accredited labs and overseen by DHA-licensed pathologists, meeting the standards required for travel, work and healthcare purposes.

Before seeing someone vulnerable

Ahead of visiting an elderly relative, a newborn or anyone receiving treatment, a swab the day before helps you decide whether to keep or postpone the visit.

Confirming a rapid antigen result

A rapid antigen test can read negative early in an infection, when a PCR test would already be positive — PCR is the one used to confirm or overturn it.

Do you have questions?

Everything you need to know about home healthcare with Vesta Care. Can’t find your answer?

Still have questions?
Our DHA-licensed care team is available 24/7.
A PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test is a diagnostic test that detects the genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It is considered the gold standard for COVID-19 testing because of its high accuracy and sensitivity.
A swab collects a sample from your nose or throat. In the lab, the PCR process multiplies the virus's genetic material millions of times, making even tiny amounts detectable, then analyses the sample to confirm whether the virus is present.
At Vesta Care, PCR testing starts from AED 99, with home sample collection anywhere in Dubai and DHA-approved results.
We offer four packages: Normal with results in 24 hours at AED 99, Express in 12 hours at AED 149, Premium in 8 to 9 hours at AED 199, and Premium Plus in 4 to 5 hours at AED 299.
Because of its high accuracy and sensitivity, the PCR test is the most reliable method for diagnosing COVID-19. It can detect the virus even early in infection and even when you have mild or no symptoms.
A positive result means the virus was detected, indicating an active COVID-19 infection. A negative result means the virus was not detected, suggesting you are not currently infected.
A DHA-licensed nurse visits your home, office, or hotel in Dubai and collects a nasal or throat swab. The process is quick, and sample collection is arranged within about 30 to 45 minutes of booking.
Yes. Our PCR results are processed at accredited labs and overseen by DHA-licensed pathologists, meeting the standards required for travel, work, and healthcare purposes.
No special preparation is needed. For the cleanest sample, it is best to avoid eating, drinking, or brushing your teeth for about 30 minutes before the swab.
A PCR test amplifies and detects the genetic material of the virus, so it picks up very small amounts and is the more sensitive of the two. A rapid antigen test looks for viral proteins and gives an answer within minutes, but it can read negative early in an infection or when the amount of virus is low. Where the two disagree, the PCR result is the one clinicians rely on.
Follow the advice of a healthcare professional. In general that means staying at home while you have symptoms, keeping away from anyone who is elderly, pregnant or immunocompromised, resting and drinking fluids, and seeking medical advice promptly if you become short of breath, if your symptoms get worse, or if you are in a higher-risk group. You can also call our clinical team on 800 4 VESTA to talk the result through.
Yes. A nasal or throat swab can be taken from a child at home with a parent or guardian present, and our DHA-licensed nurses are experienced at working with children. Tell us the child’s age when you book so the nurse arrives prepared with the right swab size.
The report names the test performed, the sample type, the date and time of collection, and the result — SARS-CoV-2 detected or not detected. It is issued by our accredited partner laboratory, which holds EIAC / ISO 15189 accreditation, is overseen by DHA-licensed pathologists, and is sent to you electronically.
