What is Hormones?
Hormones, intricate chemical messengers, orchestrate vital communication between your organs, skin, muscles, and other tissues, utilizing the bloodstream to regulate diverse bodily activities. These chemical signals are indispensable for maintaining your health and sustaining life, with more than 50 hormones identified within the human body. Central to this intricate web of communication is the endocrine system, encompassing various tissues, primarily glands, responsible for producing and releasing hormones.
These chemical messengers play a pivotal role in governing an extensive array of physiological functions, including metabolic processes, the preservation of internal equilibrium (homeostasis), management of body temperature, electrolyte and fluid balance, blood pressure regulation, blood sugar control, facilitation of development and growth, influencing sexuality, overseeing the reproductive process, regulating the wake-sleep cycle, and even modulating emotions.
What is hormones Test?
The Hormone Test involves the measurement of specific hormone levels and balances within the body. Hormones, acting as chemical messengers, play a crucial role in regulating various physiological activities, including mood, growth and development, metabolism, and reproduction. This testing process is commonly conducted to identify abnormalities or imbalances that could potentially lead to symptoms or other health issues.
Because no single blood test covers every one of those 50-plus hormones, a hormone test is always a defined panel. At Vesta Care the two mainstream panels are the Hormones Profile (Male), which reports testosterone, FSH and LH, and the Hormones Profile (Female), which reports oestradiol, progesterone, FSH and LH. Thyroid hormones, prolactin, cortisol and insulin are measured by their own profiles, listed further down this page.
How do hormones operate?
Hormones operate in your body’s communication system in two primary ways. Firstly, there’s communication between two endocrine glands, where the release of a hormone by one gland prompts another gland to release hormones in varying quantities. An example of this is the interaction between the pituitary gland and the thyroid. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), released by the pituitary gland, stimulates the thyroid gland to release hormones that affect different parts of the body.
Secondly, communication occurs between an endocrine gland and a target organ. For instance, the pancreas releases insulin, which aids in the metabolism of glucose by muscles and the liver. This process illustrates the intricate interplay of hormones in maintaining the body’s function.
That same pituitary-to-gland relay is why FSH and LH appear in both the male and the female profile: they are released by the pituitary and act on the ovaries or the testes, so reading them next to oestradiol, progesterone or testosterone shows whether a low result comes from the gland itself or from the signal reaching it.
What a hormone test helps detect
One blood draw supports the assessment of:
- Diabetes, including gestational, Type 1 and Type 2
- Thyroid disorders, from hyperthyroidism to hypothyroidism
- Menstrual irregularities including amenorrhea, anovulation and PCOS
- Female infertility and ovulation problems
- Low testosterone (hypogonadism) in men
- Weight-management issues linked to hormonal imbalance
Understanding Hormone disorders
Hormone imbalances are a primary cause of various medical disorders, with both excess and insufficient levels leading to symptoms and health issues. Addressing these abnormalities often requires treatment. Some of the most prevalent disorders associated with hormonal issues include:
What the male and female hormone profiles actually measure
A hormone profile is a defined list of parameters, not “all your hormones”. The Hormones Profile (Male) reports three: testosterone, FSH and LH. The Hormones Profile (Female) reports four: oestradiol, progesterone, FSH and LH. TSH, free T4, free T3, prolactin, cortisol, insulin and glucose are not in either profile — they are ordered as their own profiles, linked below.
