How to prepare

A PCR result is a snapshot of one moment. Whether that snapshot is worth anything depends almost entirely on when you take it: relative to an exposure, relative to your symptoms, and relative to whatever you need the result for.
What the swab is looking for
PCR detects the virus's genetic material. A nasal swab collects secretions from the nasal passage, and the laboratory then copies any viral genetic material present over and over until there is enough of it to register. That amplification step is why very small quantities can be found at all.
What it means in practice is narrower than people assume. The test measures whether viral material is present at the site sampled, at the time it was sampled. It does not measure how ill you are, how infectious you are, or how long you have had it.
Why a test the day after an exposure tells you little
After an exposure the virus needs time to replicate to a level a swab can pick up. Test too early and there is genuinely nothing there to find, so the negative is accurate about the sample and misleading about your situation.
This is the most common way a PCR result gets misread. A negative taken the morning after a known contact does not clear you; it tells you only that you were not yet detectable at that point. If you are testing because of a specific exposure rather than because you feel unwell, allow a few days, and test again if symptoms appear in the meantime.
Why a positive can outlast the illness
The mirror image causes just as much confusion. PCR detects genetic material, and fragments of it can linger in the airway well after the infection itself has resolved and you feel entirely well again.
A repeat swab is therefore a poor way to decide that you have recovered. A positive weeks after an illness that has clearly passed usually reflects residual material rather than an active infection, and clinical judgement rather than another test is what settles it. If something you need the result for has a clearance rule attached, check what that rule actually asks for before you book: requirements differ between destinations, employers and clinical settings, they change often, and a repeat swab is not always what is being asked for.
A negative when you clearly feel unwell
A negative result in someone with fever, cough and fatigue is genuine information. It makes this particular virus an unlikely explanation and moves attention to the others that produce the same picture. Influenza and a long list of other respiratory viruses and bacteria present indistinguishably at the bedside, and broader respiratory panels exist that test for them together from a single sample.
If your symptoms are significant, or simply not improving, a negative is a reason to keep looking rather than to stop.
