Most people with year-round congestion have a theory about what causes it, and the theory is usually wrong. This panel measures specific IgE against forty-four airborne allergens — the dust mites, moulds, animal proteins and regional pollens you are most likely to be breathing here — so that avoidance measures can be aimed at something rather than everything.

Sensitisation is not the same as an allergy

A positive result means your immune system has produced antibody against that allergen. It does not automatically mean that allergen is causing your symptoms — plenty of people carry measurable sensitisation to something they can live alongside without trouble.

What converts a laboratory finding into a clinical answer is whether your symptoms track your exposure. This is why the report is read against your history rather than in isolation, and why the most useful thing you can bring to the consultation is an honest account of when you feel worst and where you were at the time.

Why the panel is built around what you actually breathe here

The mix matters more than the number. A largely indoor, air-conditioned life shifts the weight of allergy exposure indoors, which is why house dust and storage mites, moulds that colonise damp and cooling systems, cockroach protein and the danders of household pets carry so much of the burden in this region.

The plant side is regional rather than borrowed from a European list — desert palm and acacia among the local pollens, alongside the ornamental and imported trees planted widely across the city. Testing against a list drawn from somewhere else is how people end up with a negative panel and persistent symptoms.

Reading the result against a symptom diary

The single most informative pattern is timing. Symptoms confined to particular weeks of the year point outdoors, towards pollen. Symptoms that persist all year, are worse on waking, and improve when you travel point indoors, towards mites, mould or an animal.

Match that pattern against the positives on your report and the shortlist usually collapses to one or two culprits. That is the point at which avoidance stops being generic advice and becomes something specific enough to be worth the effort.

What changes once you know

Targeted measures are the ones people actually sustain. Mite-proof mattress and pillow covers and hot washing of bedding are worth doing if mites are your problem and pointless if they are not. Damp control and ventilation matter for mould. An animal allergy raises harder questions, and keeping the bedroom entirely animal-free is often the realistic compromise.

Knowing the trigger also informs medication choices and the timing of them, and where symptoms are severe or poorly controlled, gives a specialist the information needed to discuss whether allergen immunotherapy is worth considering.

The limits of a forty-four allergen panel

Broad is not exhaustive, and a negative result does not mean your symptoms are imagined. Non-allergic rhinitis produces an almost identical picture and is triggered by irritants rather than allergens — dust and construction particulates, strong scents, tobacco smoke, and the abrupt temperature swings between outdoor heat and cooled interiors. It is common here, and it responds to different treatment.

A blood panel also says nothing about how your lungs are performing. Wheeze, chest tightness or breathlessness needs assessment in its own right. Blood is collected at your home, hotel or office, no fasting is required, results take four to five days, and a doctor goes through them with you.
