Your dressing is a sterile barrier against infection, so keep it clean and dry between visits. Avoid letting water run directly over it unless your nurse says it is waterproof, don't pick at or peel back the edges, and cover it as advised when you wash. If a dressing becomes wet, loose, soaked through or falls off, don't re-wrap it yourself — call Vesta Care and a nurse will change it using sterile technique.

Catching infection early keeps a small wound from becoming a serious one. Between visits, watch for spreading redness or warmth, increasing swelling or pain, yellow or green discharge, a bad smell, red streaks or a fever. Our nurses photograph and measure the wound at every visit to track healing objectively — but if you notice any of these signs in between, call us straight away, day or night.

Healing tissue is built from protein, so aim for a protein source at every meal — eggs, dairy, fish, chicken, beans or lentils. Vitamin C from citrus, peppers and tomatoes and zinc from meat, nuts and wholegrains both speed wound repair, and staying well-nourished matters even more for diabetic and pressure wounds. If your appetite is low, our nurses can advise on nutritional support as part of your care plan.

Good hydration keeps skin supple and helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to healing tissue — and in Dubai's air-conditioned indoor climate it is easy to fall behind without noticing. Aim for around 2 litres of fluid a day unless your doctor has restricted your intake, for example with some heart or kidney conditions. Water, milk and clear soups all count.

Constant pressure starves a wound of blood flow and is the main reason diabetic foot ulcers and pressure sores heal slowly. Follow your nurse's off-loading advice — special footwear or cushions for foot ulcers, and repositioning every couple of hours for anyone with limited mobility. Never walk on an open foot ulcer without the protection your nurse recommends.

High blood sugar slows every stage of wound healing and raises the risk of infection, which is why diabetic wounds need extra attention. Take your medication or insulin exactly as prescribed, keep to your monitoring routine, and tell your nurse about any readings that are consistently high. The single most important thing you can do is let a DHA-licensed nurse perform your dressing changes on schedule, using sterile technique. Changing a dressing too early, too late or without proper sterility invites infection and disturbs new tissue. Keep your visits, have your supplies ready, and let the nurse handle debridement, cleaning and advanced dressings — that is exactly what speeds safe healing.

Wound repair is hard work for the body, and much of it happens while you rest. Prioritise good sleep, avoid smoking — it constricts blood vessels and delays healing — and balance rest with the gentle movement your nurse recommends to keep circulation flowing. Give the wound the time it needs: most heal steadily over a few weeks with consistent care, and our nurses adjust the plan if progress slows.
