Your dressing is a sterile barrier against infection, so keep the surgical wound and dressing clean and dry between visits. Avoid letting water run directly over it unless your nurse says it is waterproof, don't pick at or peel back the edges, and cover it as advised when you wash. If a dressing becomes wet, loose, soaked through or falls off, don't re-wrap it yourself — call Vesta Care and a nurse will change it using sterile technique.

Catching a complication early keeps a small problem from becoming a serious one. After surgery, watch for spreading redness or warmth around the incision, increasing swelling or pain, yellow or green discharge, a bad smell, or a fever — and for calf pain or swelling, sudden breathlessness or chest pain, which can signal a blood clot. Our nurses monitor your vital signs and wound at every visit, but if you notice any of these signs in between, call us straight away, day or night.

Well-controlled pain lets you rest, breathe deeply and move — all of which speed recovery — so take your pain relief on schedule rather than waiting until pain is severe. Finish any course of antibiotics completely, even once you feel better, and never double up or skip doses. Tell your nurse about any side effects or if your pain is not controlled, and our team will coordinate with your doctor to adjust the plan.

Early, gentle movement is one of the best ways to prevent blood clots, pneumonia and pressure sores after surgery — but it must stay within the limits your surgeon set. Follow your nurse's guidance on getting out of bed, short walks and any recommended exercises, and use deep-breathing exercises to keep your lungs clear. Never push through sharp pain or lift more than you have been told; your nurse helps you progress safely.

Healing tissue is built from protein, so aim for a protein source at every meal — eggs, dairy, fish, chicken, beans or lentils. Vitamin C from citrus, peppers and tomatoes and zinc from meat, nuts and wholegrains both speed wound repair, and good nutrition also helps prevent constipation from pain medication. If your appetite is low after surgery, our nurses can advise on nutritional support as part of your recovery plan.

Good hydration keeps skin supple, helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to healing tissue and eases the constipation that pain medication can cause — and in Dubai's air-conditioned indoor climate it is easy to fall behind without noticing. Aim for around 2 litres of fluid a day unless your doctor has restricted your intake, for example with some heart or kidney conditions. Water, milk and clear soups all count.

Recovery from surgery is hard work for the body, and much of the repair happens while you rest. Prioritise good sleep, avoid smoking — it constricts blood vessels and significantly delays wound healing — and balance rest with the gentle movement your nurse recommends to keep circulation flowing. Give your body the time it needs: most people recover steadily over a few weeks with consistent care, and our nurses adjust the plan if progress slows.

The single most important thing you can do is let a DHA-licensed nurse deliver your wound care and dressing changes on schedule, using sterile technique, and attend every follow-up appointment. Skipping visits invites infection and can let a small complication go unnoticed. Keep your visits, have your supplies ready, and let your nurse handle cleaning, dressings and monitoring — and involve your family, who our nurses train to help you recover safely at home.
