Minor Cuts, Bruises & Wounds Care at Home in Dubai

For a minor cut or graze, first stop the bleeding with firm, direct pressure for a few minutes. Rinse the wound under clean running water to flush out dirt and debris, pat the surrounding skin dry, and cover with a sterile, non-stick dressing — a moist, covered wound heals faster and scars less than one left open to the air. Avoid strong antiseptics like neat iodine or alcohol directly in the wound; they can damage healing tissue. If the cut is deep, gaping or won’t stop bleeding, it likely needs stitches — our doctors suture at home.

Change the dressing daily, or sooner if it gets wet or dirty, washing your hands before and after. Each change is a chance to check the wound: a little redness at the edges is normal, but spreading redness, warmth, increasing swelling, throbbing pain, pus or a bad smell are signs of infection. A red streak spreading from the wound, or a fever, means you should be seen the same day. For sprains, strains and bruises, RICE limits swelling in the first 48–72 hours: Rest the injured part, apply Ice wrapped in a cloth for 15–20 minutes every few hours (never ice directly on skin), use a Compression bandage that is firm but not tight, and Elevate the limb above heart level when you can. Paracetamol helps pain; short-term ibuprofen also reduces swelling if you have no reason to avoid it. If you can’t bear weight or the joint looks deformed, get it assessed for a fracture.

Tetanus bacteria live in soil and dust and enter through breaks in the skin — puncture wounds, deep cuts, burns and injuries contaminated with dirt are higher risk. If your last tetanus booster was more than 10 years ago (or more than 5 years for a dirty or deep wound), you need a booster, ideally within 24 hours. Not sure when your last shot was? Most clean minor wounds heal without antibiotics — taking them “just in case” drives resistance and doesn’t speed healing. Use paracetamol or ibuprofen at the labelled dose and spacing for pain, and don’t double up on combination remedies that already contain paracetamol. Antibiotics are worthwhile when a doctor diagnoses an infected wound, an animal or human bite, or a high-risk puncture wound. Wounds, sprains and strains all heal in stages, and the new tissue is fragile for the first couple of weeks. Returning to sport, heavy lifting or a long shift too early is the most common reason a minor injury flares up or reopens. Keep sutured wounds dry for the first 24–48 hours, protect them from knocks, and reintroduce movement gradually as pain allows. Home care suits most minor injuries, but call a doctor the same day for a wound that won’t stop bleeding after 10 minutes of pressure, a cut that gapes or is deeper than about a quarter inch, an animal or human bite, a puncture wound, a suspected fracture, a joint that swells immediately, or any burn larger than a small coin or on the face, hands or genitals.
