Why Is Post-Operative Physiotherapy Important?

Your body needs structured rehabilitation after surgery to heal properly. If you don't get professional physiotherapy, you could take longer to heal, have more pain and stiffness, lose muscle strength and size, have less range of motion, develop scar tissue, and develop new movement patterns that cause problems. You could also get blood clots or pneumonia. After surgery, physiotherapy uses evidence-based methods to reduce these risks. These methods promote healing, naturally control pain (which means you don't have to rely on medication as much), stop joints from becoming stiff and muscles from losing strength, improve circulation to speed up tissue repair, gradually restore strength and flexibility, and safely guide you through each stage of recovery. At Vesta Care, we follow your surgeon's instructions closely while giving you the personalized care and frequent sessions you need to recover fully, all in the comfort of your own home.

Common Surgeries We Help You Recover From

Orthopedic Surgeries: Rehabilitation after knee, hip, or shoulder replacement; ACL reconstruction; meniscus or rotator cuff repair; spinal fusion or discectomy; fracture fixation (ORIF); ligament and tendon repairs.

Joint Procedures: Recovery after arthroscopic surgeries on the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, or ankle, as well as joint debridement, cartilage restoration, and osteotomy.

Other Surgeries: Post-operative rehabilitation following abdominal, cardiac, or thoracic surgery to restore strength, mobility, and overall function.

Our Complete Approach to Post-Operative Rehabilitation

At Vesta Care, post-operative recovery is a step-by-step process. In the first two weeks, we manage pain and swelling, support gentle movement, improve circulation, and teach safe positioning and wound care. Weeks 2–6 focus on increasing range of motion, strengthening muscles, improving flexibility, and introducing functional activities. Weeks 6–12 add resistance training, advanced functional exercises, and balance or sport-specific movements. After week 12, we prepare you to return to work or sport with endurance training, injury prevention, and movement quality improvement.

Our Unique Treatment Methods

  • Manual Therapy: Gentle joint mobilization, soft tissue and scar massage, lymphatic drainage, and myofascial release to reduce pain, swelling, and tension.
  • Therapeutic Exercise: Progressive programs including range of motion, strength, core stability, functional movements, and balance training tailored to your surgery.
  • Pain Management: Cold/heat therapy, TENS, ultrasound, and compression to relieve pain and support healing.
  • Home & Activity Programs: Guided exercises, posture and movement education, activity modifications, and tips for monitoring recovery at home or school.

Do you have questions?

What do I need to get ready for home physiotherapy sessions?

It's easy to become ready for home sessions. Wear loose, comfortable clothes that make it easy to get to the surgery site. Have any prescribed assistive devices ready (like a walker or crutches). Stick to your pain medication schedule so you're comfortable during therapy. Clear a small space for exercises, have your surgery information and surgeon's protocol ready for the first visit, and it’s recommended that a family member be there at first to learn how to help properly. All the equipment our physiotherapists need is with them. We'll look at your home and make suggestions for how to make it safer and better for your recovery.

Does physiotherapy stop the need for more surgery?

Good post-operative physiotherapy can lower the chance of needing revision surgery in the future by making sure that surgical repairs heal properly, keeping joints in the right position and working properly, building strong muscles that protect surgical sites, stopping injuries from happening in other parts of the body, teaching people how to move correctly for long-term joint health, and finding problems early on before they get worse. Some revisions happen because of things that therapy can't control, like implant failure or disease progression. But full rehabilitation gives you the best chance of a favorable surgery outcome and a long life. Many patients who don't go to or don't finish their post-op therapy end up needing more surgery.

Would it be possible for me to do the exercises without physiotherapy?

Surgeons prescribe basic exercises, but professional physiotherapy is very important for the best recovery. Proper exercise progression is important for post-operative rehabilitation. If you move too quickly, you could hurt yourself again, and if you move too slowly, it will take longer to heal. Our physiotherapists make sure you do your exercises correctly to avoid compensatory patterns, spot and treat problems early, change your programs based on how quickly you heal, teach you hands-on techniques that only trained professionals can do, and keep you motivated during tough times in your recovery. Exercising on your own often doesn't work out as well as it could. Getting professional help greatly increases your chances of a full and safe recovery.

Will physiotherapy after surgery hurt?

It's normal to feel some pain during physiotherapy after surgery, but it shouldn't be too severe. As you get your strength and movement back, you may feel some pain. This is normal and part of the healing process. We always work within your pain tolerance, though, and change our methods as needed. If you have sharp, severe, or worsening pain, it's not normal, and we change your treatment right away. A lot of the time, patients feel less pain during and after sessions because we use gentle techniques, help reduce swelling, and improve circulation. We teach you the difference between productive discomfort, which means your muscles are working, and harmful pain, which means your tissues are damaged. This method makes sure that your rehabilitation is safe and effective.

Is physiotherapy at home after surgery as effective as treatment in a clinic?

Yes, studies show that home-based rehabilitation after surgery can be just as or even more effective than going to the clinic. Some of the benefits are that you can have more sessions during the important early recovery period, you won't have to travel when you're healing, you won't be at risk of getting an infection in a clinical setting, you'll be treated in your own home, where you'll be living, your family can help you learn how to help, and you'll be less stressed, which will help you heal faster.

How long does physiotherapy after surgery last?

The type and extent of surgery, your age and health, your level of fitness before surgery, how well you follow the therapy program, and whether or not you have complications all affect how long it takes to recover. General rules say that minor arthroscopic surgeries take 4 to 8 weeks, ACL reconstruction takes 6 to 9 months to fully return to sports, total knee or hip replacement takes 3 to 6 months to get back to normal, and spinal fusion takes 3 to 12 months depending on how many levels are fused. We set realistic expectations for your surgery during your first assessment and keep an eye on your progress objectively throughout treatment.

When should I start physical therapy after surgery?

The best time to start depends on the type of surgery, but in general, it's better to start early. Physiotherapy can start 1 to 3 days after most orthopedic surgeries, as long as you are medically stable and your surgeon gives you the all-clear. People who have joint replacements usually start therapy the day after surgery. After an ACL reconstruction, therapy typically begins within the first week. People who have spinal surgeries may start therapy within days or weeks, depending on the type of surgery. Starting early keeps things from going wrong, like stiffness, muscle loss, and blood clots. At Vesta Care, we work with your surgeon to find the best time for your surgery to start. Our home service makes early intervention easier to get because you don't have to go anywhere.
